What is a Scalable SSL Certificate?

There are a variety of SSL certificates on the market. These certificates offer various levels of security and encryption bit lengths. One popular certificate is the scalable SSL certificate because it not only offers a high level of security; it provides a wide array of encryption bit length.

The Scalable SSL Certificate

Most SSL certificates will offer the length of encryption that modern browsers support. The default encryption strength for many certificates is 2048 Bits. Older browsers will not support this high of an encryption length, as many of them will only support encryption lengths of 256, 128, and 40 bits. If a customer with an older browser wishes to view a site that has a certificate that provides an encryption length that is higher than what the browser can support, the customer will be presented with a message that tells him or her that he or she will need to upgrade the browser before viewing the site.

A scalable SSL certificate, on the other hand, will adjust the level of encryption strength it provides based on the browsers customers are using to browse the site, scaling up or down. This way, customers will not have to upgrade their browsers in order to view the website. Let’s say, for instance, that a customer has a browser that only supports an encryption length of 40 bits. When this customer views the site, the scalable SSL certificate will adjust itself according to what the browser will allow, providing the customer with the maximum encryption strength that their browser can support.

Scalable SSL certificates are generally on the high end in terms of cost. However, many business owners feel that purchasing such a certificate is a good investment. The investment is outstanding because it will allow a wide range of customers to view a website with the least amount of hassle. When a site presents a hassle for customers, any of the following things could happen:

  • The website could receive bad press because customers will be sure to share their hassles with friends, loved ones and colleagues.

  • Customers to take their business elsewhere because they do not want to have to take any extra steps to take care of business.

  • The company will not make the maximum amount of profits possible because the site is not entirely accessible to everyone.

One may not think that customers will be scared away from a site because they have to do something as simple as upgrading a browser; however, this has been known to cause customers to run. For one thing, customers will not want to do any more than they have to when it comes to surfing the Internet. We live in a society where everything has to be done with the least amount of hassle possible, so it is important that business owners keep this in perspective, even if it means doing all they can to ensure people will be forced to upgrade their browsers.

Why Not Upgrade the Browser?

There are a multitude of reasons why customers will not upgrade their browsers. One reason may be that the device or computer they are using will not support modern browsers. This is especially the case if customers are using older computers and devices with outdated operating systems. A second reason may be that the customer prefers to use an older browser because he or she is comfortable with its controls and features and is reluctant to learn something new. For these reasons, many business owners believe that a scalable SSL certificate is a necessary investment.
